Hello from sunny Southport

Post by dougoutcanoe »

I've been interested in cacti and succulents for many years but only had a few plants.

About 5 years ago I inherited my Mother in Law's small collection, which was struggling due to her idea of "desert plants don't need much water" and the compost in a very shallow tray of mixed varieties had not been changed or fed for about 20 years.

I lost a few of them in my battle to get them growing but the survivors are thriving. New compost and enough water, they now look much healthier.

Apologies for the poor quality of the time-lapse.

I have several more cacti to identify and a growing collection.

Hi Doug,
Welcome to the forum. I can't see your pictures (there is thread on here somewhere about how to post photos but not sure where!) but I think your rat tail cactus is likely to be Aporocactus flagelliformis. If you can figure out how to pop up photos somewhere on here will be able to tell it to the genus at least I'm sure.

Thank you edds.

I have put in links to the photos until I learn how to add photos to the posting.

Hi Doug
Welcome to the forum.
Some fine rescue work there
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Hi Doug,
Welcome to the Forum. We look forward to hearing more from you.
Your 'rat tail' cactus is in fact a Peanut Cactus.
It has undergone many name changes in the last few decades, including Cereus silvestri, Chamaecereus silvestri, Lobivia silvestri and, more recently, Echinopsis chamaecereus.
