Also Mat, is there any room for new growth on that beheaded plant? the existing leaves look really compact together
From what I've seen to date, beheaded Echeverias tend to grow offshoots from the top of the steam, but we will see - I can always remove some leaves if I notice anything between them. Thanks for mentioning this, I will keep an eye on it!

They will grow them from any leaf base IME.

This is an Echeveria chihuahensis that got eaten by vine weevils last summer (they even burrowed up the stem and ate the growing point!) and it has sent out new shoots from between leaves as well as on top. Where there wasn't much space the new growths have forced leaves apart to make it!

I'm hoping it will make a cracking multi-stemmed plant once these rosettes grow and the old leaves wither away. Or I'll chop it up into a number of single rosettes!

That's the important part!

Edit: And yes, the new rosettes grow from everywhere they can, I had this particular 'Belle Etoile' in mind when I replied earlier and generalised a tad too much. As there isn't any free space between the leaves, I'd assume it will grow upwards, but that's part of the experiment as well.

Here is Weingartia leocoriensis. The tubercles remind me of ariocarpus retusus.
