Pterocactus in vogue

Post by Tony R »

Pterocactus seem to be in vogue in this sub-Forum at the moment.
A good friend sent me some aged plants last summer, so I removed all the top growth as propagation material and repotted the original tubers. Here are the results so far this spring:

Perhaps one day, in many years time, the P. reticulatus will be like Ralph's magnificent plant seen in an earlier thread.

I like that last one Tony, what is it?

And as for "many years time" - that plant with all the flowers was a single stemmed unrooted cutting in 2018. So in this case,
many=2 :grin:
if you hit on the right method (or like me, have beginner's luck?). I've also cooked a couple along the way, so it's not all success.

It came to me labelled as P. australis WP51

I think WP51 actually refers to this entry in your database

Field number: WP 92-39/51
Collector: Wolfgang Papsch
Species: Pterocactus australis fma.
Locality: Ruta 61, vor Arroyo de los Berros, Rio Negro, Argentina
Altitude:
Date: 1992
Notes:

but Cyril Hunkeler suggests it is P. fischeri - his website http://www.tephroweb.ch/ptero/wp51.htm

From the stems and 'fruits' I removed last year, I have some segments growing, so may have some useful propagations in the future:
