Ugly plant nice flower

Post by RAYWOODBRIDGE »

Like quite a few Maihueniopsis, hickenii can be an ugly plant, but the flowers make up for it.

I think the plant is just as beautiful as that amazing flower! Really beautiful.

That also looks lovely. It's quite tiny, isn't it? Or is it enormous undergound?

I've just sprouted some seed of this species, progress is so far so good, but I hear it has a reputation for being very tricky. Do you have any cultivation tips for it?

Sorry esp. no tips. I’ve only had it for two years and didn’t realise it is tricky....now there’s a kiss of death.
It flowered last year too, so not difficult to flower.
I tend to be frugal on feed and water my small Opuntias slightly less than the average. Compost is 75% or so mineral.
That is a 12cm Soparco octagonal pot.
If I keep it going there will be offsets if folk want them, in a year or two
