Tephrocactus Geometricus advice

Post by HaoBao »

Hi all,

Just wondered if you could confirm if this was a flower growing and also to ask you for any advice keeping this type of cactus indoors. Are there any things I should watch out for?

Kind regards

Paul

All my plants are kept indoors and I started collecting in August 2018. Favourites are Pachyphytum, Echeveria, Haworthia, Mesembs and oddball Cacti.

I would think it's probably a pup, flower buds usually appear from the top most segment (in my experience). I've not grown it indoors so cannot advise, but in the greenhouse, I grow them on a top shelf, as much sun as possible.

As Diane said, both: a) a pup (offset) and b) full sun. It should grow into beautiful plant in few years, good luck :)

You were right, it is a new ball.

I’m still concerned that the main plant is deflating, is there anything I should do?

I last watered it 8 days ago and it was pretty shrivelled then too.

Also, is there a way to post portrait pictures here without them auto rotating?

Many thanks

Paul

Yes, the buds look a bit different. After a few have popped out, you'll begin to recognise the difference.

It looks fine to me; the segments can have a habit of some shrinkage.

Here are some buds for comparison with segments:

Thank you Ralph, Tony and AnTTun. Really appreciate the advice and pictures, there are some plants that get worried about more than others and this is one of them for me. I don’t feel so bad now if it’s normal to get a bit wrinkled and the discoloured part on the bottom is similar to some of the others. Now I’m just worried about my astrophytums!
