Hi Cindermanrolls;
Well it is certainly a Corynopuntia, my first thought was that it was the short spine version of C. vilis but the segments on your plant are generally round not club shape as per vilis.
After a bit of research I found there is a large segment less compact more open growing sub species called Corynopuntia bulbispina ssp. basileocephala which appears to grow more like a Corynopuntia.
Rather than the usual very compact upright growth of bulbispina.

After weeks of gloomy days, we have a sunny morning and a bud open on my mystery "bulbispina".
What do people think to Ray's suggestion of Corynopuntia bulbispina ssp. basileocephala?
