So a local retirement village had a plant sale to raise some money and I picked up this little fellow. Segments detach very easily..

Suggestions on what it may be?

I don't know the species, but it looks like this genus in general is not allowed into Australia!

For the most part. Cylindropuntia and austrocylindropuntias are a no go entirely. Opuntia we are allowed one species and that’s Opuntia ficus-indica. I’m thinking this may be a Cylindropuntia species but unsure which. I never saw the mother plant. Planning to grow it for a bit to see what species it is as there’s not many Cylindropuntia in this area. We have Opuntia tomentosa, Opuntia stricta and Opuntia aurantiaca.

A few hours south east we have Cylindropuntia imbricata. Had a pleasant evening trialling different control methods on them last March, plus we introduced a new species of Cochineal to the area to see if it’s more effective than currently present species.

I think it is the monstrose form of Cylindropuntia fulgida var. mammillata :

A Cylindrountia in any case.
