Probably technically not a ‘small Opuntia’ but it is flowering at a surprisingly young two years from a single pad cutting. A nice surprise.

One of the very hardiest, Ralph. Far hardier than it needs to be for anywhere in the UK. Wet tolerant, too.

It must be one of the untidiest growing plants. Tolerant down to -25C .... but Canada cold is dry cold ... not soggy UK cold which causes rot even in native UK species.
Hope mine produces as beautiful a flower as that one.

I used to grow it for years in a raised alpine bed in Kent - it eventually outgrew its welcome!

Beautiful plant.
This one is O. cespitosa/macrorhiza (likely conspecific), O. humifusa is spineless with inconspicuous areoles and lacks red inner tepals.

Sadly the clone I grow lacks the red colour in the flower but has 5-10 flowers each year. Slugs and snails love them!
