Best aloedary?

Post by Pattock »

I was just checking the OED to see if it was aloid or alöoid for aloe relatives and found a word that is new to me. It was classified as "Obsolete. rare." Anyone care to reverse that by insisting bookshops keep their aloedaries classified together and shoe-horning it into every discussion of books about Aloe?

Aloedary, n.

The first definition was simply aloe as a purging medicine.

2. A monograph or treatise on plants of the genus Aloe.

1753 Chambers's Cycl. Suppl. (at cited word) Munting has published an Aloedary, at the end of his history of the Herba Britannica.

1781 ALOEDARY is also used for a history of the class of plants, under the denomination of ALOES.

The Aloidarium of Abraham Munting, dated 1680.

Abraham Munting ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Munting ) was an artist as well as a botanist and his pictures show that some of his aloes are now regarded as other genera, like Aloe americana minor. Coloured versions can be found on Google but they are mostly on pinterest, so here are the originals:

There is an interruption of two pages of text before the pictures resume. If you are not familiar with the Biodiversity Heritage Library, the + above the pages increases the magnification and is essential. You can also get the pages sent to you automatically by email if you want to keep a full-size pdf.

So, which is the best modern aloedary?

I'm not sure.

Of course, we now need recommendations on Kumaradaries, Aloidendronaries & etc now as well.
Also, confirmation on how to spell them? :???:

I am pretty sure that aloedary will cover sensu lato.
