Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
Hi all,
My plant of a Aloe haworthioides is currently putting on a nice flower display, but a new addition from this year of a supposed var aurantiaca is not. I know the formal descriptions of both varieties, and the fact that they differ only by the flower colour, but I was wondering if anybody could post a picture of Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca flowers, as I really was not able to find a good one online. Lots of hits, but of not much real value.
Maciej

Re: Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
Hi Maciej
I didn't take a picture of mine when in flower, but it was a bit more yellowish than that. On the other hand "aurantiaca" does mean orange...
What do the leaves look like?

What do the leaves look like? Mine looks distinctly different to the type variety.

Re: Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
When you say flower colour are you referring to the tepals or the filaments?
NB.to those unfamiliar with the species, the colourful part that can be seen in the flowers is actually the highly developed and colourful filament part of the stamens, whereas the tepals are reduced in size and bland
Especially interested in Mesembs. small Aloes and South African miniatures and bulbs.

Here are my v. haworthioides and v. aurantiaca repsectively. The latter is much less "spikey".

Re: Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
Hi Ralph, I'd be very interested in seeing the flower on the second one, as the plant itself looks very similar to some of the hybrids I made using var. haworthioides.ralphrmartin wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 5:49 pm Here are my v. haworthioides and v. aurantiaca repsectively. Re: Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
I just had a look in The Aloes of Madagascar (Castillon)
In which it states that the flowers of normal haworthiodes are white to pink while var.auranticaca are orange to red. If this is true, again it begs the question, is he talking about Tepal colour or filament colour? If it is filament colour, I would say all the haworthiodes I have seen in cultivation are var.aurantiaca!

I'll send a pic when it flowers, but that's likely to be another 10 or 11 months...
It came from Broookside.

Re: Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
You have beaten me Brian to replying to your previous post. Yes, I can only reference to the same book. Taking this into account, I just would like to see the picture of flowers for var. aurantiaca, to be able to compare to my own plant. Or ideally, flowers of both varieties one next to the other.BrianMc wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 2:29 pm I just had a look in The Aloes of Madagascar (Castillon)

Re: Aloe haworthioides var aurantiaca
So did mine come from Alan. I have doubts about it, as per quoted above description, the plants should not supposedly differ in the way they look. Even more, mine just as yours, have white speckles on its leaves. Any pictures from anybody would be very welcomed, as at this point as suggested by Brian, I think that mine is var. aurantiaca as well.ralphrmartin wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 7:23 pmI'll send a pic when it flowers, but that's likely to be another 10 or 11 months...
