Group planting haworthia

Post by HaoBao »

On a different thread Ralph suggested reading Franz Buxbaum’s book, I couldn’t find an online book but found this article

https://www.jstor.org/stable/42788945?s ... b_contents

In it he suggesting plants doing well as group planting in a tray. Anyone else try it with haworthia?

It takes up less space and looks neater, but uses more soil and will be a bit more awkward to check the plants

All my plants are kept indoors and I started collecting in August 2018. Favourites are Pachyphytum, Echeveria, Haworthia, Mesembs and oddball Cacti.

Looks nice and as long as they all have similar watering requirements then I can see it working well. You could have some fun with more decorative arrangements too with rocks and things set out more naturally too.

Thanks Ed, The layout isn't the best all in a grid like that, doesn't look very natural but I need to make space for all the seeds haha. I usually water them all together so hopefully it's ok. The next one I do will have a bit more variety in it. Also hope I don't see a mealybug any time soon.

The other tray potted up with the others. The few ones that don’t seem to like the lights I left in pots so I can move them around

Was able to save the space of all these pots by planting them in those two trays.

The problem with most group plantings is that plants rarely grow at the same rate, unless you choose very carefully. This necessitates replanting everything more often than you might do if they were all in individual pots.

Good point Ralph but they're looking good in there, especially the one not in rows. Hopefully, all being so similar, they will all grow at similar enough rates to keep it working well for a while. Keep us posted HaoBao!

If I take a photo from above in a few months we might be able to see a difference, it's hard to tell without photos sometimes (Except the 'Reinwardtii' that one just changes colour). I took a few leaf cuttings off the one that is second from bottom, three from the right, it was sold as haworthia 'Suisho' but I am never sure on haworthia names. If I get some growth from those leaves I was planning on trying some of the other plants too so they might all get repotted then too.

I messaged Renny of Renny's Haworthia on Instagram and she said she doesn't use much fertiliser for hers, only some slow release stuff but she didn't say which type or how much. I was gonna leave it a while before I ask for more info. Does anyone know any other good growers or infomation for their techniques?

Just had a quick look myself and found this

They look great planted like that, I'm quite tempted to do this with some of my plants. Where did you get the trays?

They were from Ikea:

There are a few different sizes available, pretty sturdy about 3mm thick. They come with a lid that could be used as a drip tray too.
