Astrophytum caput-medusae; second generation

Post by sechjoh » Thu Feb 17, 2011 4:23 pm

It all started in 2007 when I found this site and start to look at all the nice pictures they have. When I browse around I stumbled over this beautiful plant. I was hooked :)

It took a while before I understood that this is a rare plant and very much longer before I understood that all plants and seeds that was out there was illegal in someway. However, 2008 I asked around and found out that Köhres has this seeds and I ordered 5 seeds for 20€. They germinated very fast but died almost as fast :( The year after I did it all again but now the seeds was a bit cheaper  but all died anyway :( I actually gave it all up, until now. SuccSeed has seeds for 2,77€ and I ordered some :)

When they start to germinate I took one and grafted it, but it looked not so nice

HI Christer
I wonder if you could regraft it, although it's getting nutrients or wouldn't be so plump.
I'm so clumsy I would knock it off, I have done that too many times  .

Whats the competition ? , to get the largest plant it will be interesting to compare stockes as mine is on Perskiopsis.

Whats the largest own roots plant anyone has seen ?
Tina

Because of the what-seems-to-be a failure I went on and made 3 more grafts and this time I used 3 different stocks. My thought was that the stock didn't like the scion

However, now I can compare 3 different stocks made from same seed batch and grafted at the same time :geek:

Hi Christer,
That´s a great idea to compare the growing speed/outcome of the seedlings. Were they all the same size when grafted?

Yes, about. But the zoom and image-cutting may say not

But one seedling looked different when I looked at it after a while :geek:

Even the seeds are awesome... I remember someone - was it Phil - who posted pics of some seedlings who were sticking their two fingers up. They do it even as seeds!!!

I love the little three-fingered graft too. I wonder if plants generally are more likely to get more multiple when on a super-fuel accelerated grafted life?
Happy carrier of Forby Disorder - an obsession with Euphorbia obesa.

NB. Anyone failing to provide a sensible name for me to address them will be called, or referred to, as Fred.

I don't quite follow you on the two fingers part, but if it's funny I laugh with you :lolbt:
