Re: San Jose C&S Society Show & Sale
Their judging criteria really are different to ours in the UK, aren't they? Yes, some of those plants are fantastic but there are also some less-than-spectacular plants presented beautifully, in fancy pots. I always knew they got points for pots but this really brings home to me the importance they place on it. It's more like flower arranging than horticulture. (I'd rather see plants, even slightly scruffy plants with a bit of character, in battered old BEF squares any day. No prizes for realising I don't really 'do' shows!)
Phil Crewe, BCSS 38143. Mostly S. American cacti, esp. Lobivia, Sulcorebutia and little Opuntia

Re: San Jose C&S Society Show & Sale
If I was interested in pots rather than plants, I wouldn't grow cacti - I'd be into flower arranging and interior design, not growing demanding plants that require car and attention for years - not that there is anything wrong with flower arranging and interior design. It's a different skill set and I would be sorry to see pots as part of the judging set

Part of the judging of cacti is the presentation which includes the pot .

I found some of the pots so interesting, that I did not look at the plants. They looked home made and very nice too. I can see that very fancy pots do detract from the plants but the plants showed off the pots so well.
Obsessive Crassulaceae lover, especially Aeoniums but also grow, Aloes, Agaves, Haworthias and a select number of Cacti.

I have found the rules for the show, staging (which I assume includes the pot) is only 5 points out of 100. Also plant names are required on the entry card but a label is not required in the pot.
