Very successful germination rate!

Post by NaZzAtAzEr »

After many attempts, I've never had a germination rate as good as this. Followed the bcss guide this time.

Seeds from msg and bcss forum, but most of them are lithops.
Can't wait to watch these grow.

I always stick to one species per pot - and even then, the odd seed manages to splash across into an adjacent pot. It's always annoying when you think you have just one of something unusual come up, only to find its something you have 20 of in the next pot.

I often do mixed sowings, but always of plants with similar growing needs, similar growth rates and which are distinctive enough that I can tell them apart, even when the seeds have been displaced from the exact spot where sown. So I'd definitely not mix Lithops with cacti, and I probably wouldn't mix different Lithops.

I would also not do this. But for seedlings it will not be much of a problem. Once they are maybe two years old it might be better to repot the seedlings into separate pots and keep them separate. Until then I don't see many problems.

The biggest problem might be sowing species next to eachother that are hard to distuinguish from eachother. There are always seeds that don't fall exactly within the bounderies, or grow right on the edge along with their neighbours. It can be hard to tell them apart once you want to repot them.

I painstakingly placed each seed with a screwdriver   (apart from the large clump of lithops, gave up at that point)
I just don't have the space to store all these seeds in individual pots so if it means that some get mixed up, I'm all for it because I'm really enjoying this stuff.

There's a machine in Holland that sows Lithops seeds, one seed at a time.

It's a seed sowing machine.

It was invented by the Dutch footballer Clarence Seedorf.
