Aloe polyphylla hybrids

Post by JoelR »

I remember reading Clarke Brunt had tried to create an AP hybrid with Aristaloe aristata but I don’t know if the seedlings turned out to be just aristata.
I have some seedlings which I’m hopeful are Aristaloe aristata x Aloe polyphylla and another which is the result of brushing AP pollen onto Kelly Griffin hybrid Aloe Pink Blush. Wishful thinking maybe?

I haven't got Aloe aristata but I notice the first plant has the line of spines down the back ridge of the leaf just like polyphylla. Does aristata usually have that? If not, you may well have a successful polyphylla X aristata hybrid!

Well done for getting them flowering together or did you save the pollen.
We will all be interested in any spares   .

On Tuesday the zoom talk is by Karen zimmerman, well known Aloe hybridiser from USA so you will see some lovely eye candy & hopefully get some handy tips.

They just happened to be in flower around the same time. Some of the AP pollen came from Melissa Scott and I posted her pollen from my plant also.

I will look out for that thank you Tina.

Aristaloe does to some extent have that spiny ridge (see first pic). The three seedlings above all have a general look of Aristaloe but have broader leaves than the seed parent. A few of the other seedlings have been slower growing and less like Aristaloe (second pic).

No idea why the pictures are sideways on!

Fingers crossed that they are hybrids and not just wider leaved variations!

Is it age or size before aloe polyphylla flowers or both ?
