Hi,
Swapped a few plants with someone a couple of weeks ago, besides others I should have got a Mammillaria Zeilmanniana, no not rare at all, and a plant I've had in the past (haven't we all?) But as soon as I saw this I know it was wrong! Spines perhaps too short and definely the wrong colour, hopefully there's still time for it to flower, which might help a little. But in the meantime would you like to hazzard a guess!! it's in a 3" pot
Take a look at the growing centre, it's either been damaged or perhaps spliting?
In advance, many thanks.
Mel.

Yes, definitely not zeilmanniana! It could be M.elegans or a form of hahniana?

My first thought was M. hahniana. It might be starting to divide dichotomously on top, which would suggest one of only a handful of species that normally does this, and M. hahniana isn't one of them.

Actually, in another forum, there are pictures taken by Wolter ten Hoeve in habitat of a M. hahniana population in which plants divide dichotomously. It struck me as odd at the time I saw them, but I guess you'll find all sorts of unusual variations if you look long enough.

Looks like haageana to me.
Don't know if that splits or not.

Hi, Thanks for your replies.
Having taken a closer look at this plant with an 8x mag, the spines are not that different to M. hahniana, just shorter and tidy, my M. hahniana have always had plenty of long spines or hair? Perhaps I'll just have to wait for some flowers, and see where that growing centre goes!
