Not as bad as it looks; my soil mix isn't very compressible so the roots push the soil to the sides as they expand. Still a bit tight in there though! Lophophoras do like to make most of their growth underground.

In another pot, I thought this solid mass of stems was a dozen or more seedlings. Turns out to be just five Avonia quinarioides plants. The roots are more tree-like than the species it was named for.
