Hoya...

Post by Smel »

Hi,
Do you grow hoyas? Except for H.bella I've always grown them as climbers, training them up canes, but it does seem many (Perhaps your general house plant grower) grow them as hanging plants! Which way do you grow them. Which way is right, I think they perhaps do both.
I'd Love to see some pics

Best wishes.

Mel.

I have a Hoya Carnosa compacta or Hindu Rope plant in my conservatory, which unfortunately has gone quite yellow. It's healthy and flowers without fail every year. It's just getting a bit too much light I think.

Growing in Nottingham for the past 4 years and recently found my way to a Nottingham branch meeting. A few plants on a windowsill has very quickly turned into a greenhouse full!

Attempting to grow a range of caudiciforms, tylecodon, euphorbia, coryphantha and turbinicarpus along with anything else that takes my fancy. I avoided mesembs for a long time but conophytums have recently broken my resolve.

Some Hoya are climbers, but not all. My Hoya serpens, linearis and curtisii (and a few more) have thin, weak stems that do not even attempt to climb anything. Here is my serpens:

While I like Hoyas, and don't want to put a dampener on things, do watch that one with curly leaves carefully. Most Hoyas attract mealy bug (because of the nectar?), but if you have that crinkly one, they can hide in between the folds of the leaves where you can't see them, until you have a serious problem...

Some years ago I collected more than 20 different hoyas in searching of "ideal fragrant plant". Hoya lacunosa won a competition (nice strong fragrance, very prolific bloomer!) and I got rid of many others because their growth was very abundant and our house windows turned into jungle. :) One very succulent H rupicola stays with cacti and good old H carnosa is still on its own place.

Hoya linearis has a very strong and pleasant scent, but its not the easiest to grow, and even harder to flower...
