Looking for an i.d please.

Post by EdMcKenna »

First of all sorry if I've duplicated this request, my first one seems to have disappeared.
I grew this from a packet of mixed seeds 15 years ago, an I.d would be appreciated. It has nice spines and red colouring on the new growth. It was not in the best environment for a few years so I think it could have been larger.

I've been puzzling over this one for a while, it's the right shape for Pachycereus Pringlei but the body isn't the right blue-green colour and the new spines are the wrong colour. That only leaves Trichocereus as far as I can think.

I think your first thought was right Stuart it looks like P. pringlei to me , I have a couple with the same body colour as the one in Ed's photo.

Pachycereus for sure. Maybe a nicely grown P. pecten-aboriginum

My 2 P. pecten-aboriginum don't have that much spine growth Tom,
But then again I am not growing them in Tucson where I would expect you get more and stronger spines.

Thank you for the replies, I am thinking it is a P pringlei.
From looking at on line sources there does seem to be quite a variety of spination in terms of colour and size. Combine this with the fact that most pics show mature specimens aka Giant Cardon cactus it's no wonder I was stumped.
Thanks again (tu)

If, when it gets to about 5ft, the body is much 'bluer' and the spines become much shorter, then you've got the right name. It still doesn't look quite right though it's easier to name some plants by seeing them 'in the flesh'
