What Gymno?

Post by Smel »

Hi,
I've had this plant some time, from someone who sells plant often via this forum, but that's not the problem. I have it named as Gymnocalycium uebelimannianum, today it flowered for the first time, an Orange flower, well almost!! When I looked the plant up according to Pilbeam it should have white flowers and chalky white spines.... So it must be Gymnocalcium baldianum?? or is it as it doesn't quite fit that description either, it seems to have a central spine pointing downwards.

I suppect someone is going to tell my how variable this plant is! and not to bother about it too much, or is there more??

Mel.

One of my Gymnocalycium decided to change its flower colour late season from pink to white. Baldianum in spring = pink ..... but late summer = white. The red one has flowered red ... red .... red.
Makes identification a tad difficult.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Is it one of mine? If it is and there are any code numbers with it I could probably trace it back a bit.

I was meaning Smel's plant. I should have quoted for clarity.

Isn't it just a G. baldianum with a slightly unusual flower colour?

It looks that way? unless anyone knows better! I did lose my G.baldianium some time ago, so perhaps I've now got it back.
