Even with truncatas & co. I noticed the roots started shrivelling a day or two after I took the cuttings. Do they need to stay moist all the time? I'll try to keep them on the more moist side and see.

I’ve done it with truncata ones. Accidentally broken root was placed in a slightly wet compost. Never let compost to dry completely.
First signs of green showed up in about two months.
Tried it with not so fat roots and it did not work.

The nearest I have come to doing it was with a Haworthia "Tarrington" which some slug grazed right down to ground level. It's taken about 5 years to recover into a decent looking plant.

A quick update on this, I have a couple of nice, tiny plantlets (I hope that's the right term at least) from leaf cuttings as a backup and even the wee satellite dish grew some roots! Oddly, the roots seem to be growing from the end of the flower stalk I left, something that might need some attention later @edds

How interesting Mat! I can't wait to see it in person and spoil it. Will see about whether it needs planting more deeply to get it rooting at the base of the plantlet.

It was planted right up to the bottom of the plantlet. I am thinking that it will either just stay as is forever, or perhaps grow some new plantlets from the base of the current root?

Fingers crossed! It is planted in clay granules just under the surface so hopefully there's a chance it might throw roots from the plantlet bases and/or plantlet from the base of the stem.
