Auction of John Pilbeams plants

Post by Mike P »

DISPOSAL OF PLANTS FROM THE COLLECTION
OF JOHN PILBEAM

Arrangements are now being made to sell the collection of the late JOHN PILBEAM.

John had spent a long lifetime collecting and studying cacti and other succulents, extending for over 70 years. His family cared for his plants over the last two years, under his direction, and this ensured that they have remained in reasonable to good condition. John had a very wide-ranging interest in both cacti and other succulents and the extensive mixture of plants in the collection reflects this. There are some extremely interesting and unusual plants to be sold which include some he had collected in connection with the writing of his books.
We cannot possibly list them all here but plants of note include several Ariocarpus and choice Mexican miniature plants, some Haworthias, some large Sansevierias, some Mammillarias as well as a selection of South American cacti. One highlight is an exceptional Aztekium ritteri, grown from seed by John over 60 years ago.

The collection will be sold by private auction by invitation only and will be held in the Orpington area, southeast of London in the London Borough of Bromley
.
On SUNDAY 22nd October 2023
Viewing from 1000 hrs. Auction commences 1100 hrs.**

(** time of start may be changed dependent on the response to this announcement as there is limited space and numbers may have to be limited on a first come basis for Health and Safety reasons. If this is the case a reserve list will be created once the optimum number is reached.
Arrangements can be made for reserved bidding if this occurs.

Please note: - There is limited access to the rear of the premises where the auction will be held and it means walking up a very steeply sloping driveway which would not be suitable for those with impaired mobility or wheelchair users etc.

Due to the possibility of significant numbers attending, it is essential that you notify us of your interest as soon as possible. Full details of the sale arrangements, including a copy of the list of plants, will then be supplied to you as soon as it is ready. The next step after that is for you to confirm your attendance at the auction, when you will be allocated a bidding number.

ALL plants will be sold as seen - some of the names listed may not be botanically correct. Not every plant has a name label.

ALL LOTS BOUGHT MUST BE PAID FOR ON THE DAY and removed by the successful purchaser, arrangements will be made for a scheduled collection of sold items after the completion of the sale.
