Trying to find a book on cacti

From your description I wonder if it was Barthlott's book with the simple title "Cacti" published in 1979 - it is the only one I can think of that size and at the time quite widely available which covers a wider range of aspects of cacti than others.

I bought this one as late as 1992 (a reprint of the 1981 Prague edition) for £8.99.

Although it's rather brief on most plant descriptions. the collection of unusual photos, and rarely cultivated succulent plants, made it "a keeper" until the present. As a matter of fact I was so impressed by a barrel cactus shown, that I had never seen photographed (Ferocactus schwarzii), that I soon made it a priority to add to my collection. I now own several.
