With luck, it's an offset, although I have what may be described as woolly warts develop on a similar way on Rebutias - somewhat misshaped, and with areoles with wool rather than spines. I presume they are rather like the lumps you see on trees sometimes, which I believe are caused by a bacterial infection.

Its an offset, very unusual for one of these.
Some of my ariocarpus do this , very ugly until they get bigger

Looks very smart, MIke, when you 'blow it up'.
Lots of little tubercles bursting through there. (tu)

The main growing point isn’t damaged so not sure what has caused it.
Should be very interesting in time.

I was equally excited that one of my Oreocereus celsianus has started to produce an offset at the bottom of the body.
For completeness, I've also added the top of the plant, some 42 inches higher up.

I prefer the plants that haven't read the books they are the ones I actively look for.
I got this earlier in the year in a batch of plants, its a copiapoa columnar -alba that is offsetting profusely, own roots never grafted with undamaged growing point. looking at the label it also flowers at this size.
It is a UK seed grown plant.
