Return to BCSS

Post by Hahniana »

Hello everyone,

I have happily renewed my membership of BCSS after an absence. I first joined as a teenager, now I am in my late forties but my love of cacti and succulents has not faded. Now, due to a health condition, I must keep my collection in check, but my plants enjoy a sunny windowsill in Shetland and seem very happy, flowering every year. The fatigue and tremor associated with my condition presents me with many challenges, but cacti I find very tolerant... And I have learned a few tips on how to make things easier, like wearing thick vinyl gloves for repotting...

With best wishes to all.

Hi hahniana
Welcome to the forum and seasonal greetings.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Welcome back! I'm fascinated to know more of the challenges associated with growing cacti and such a latitude. Can you share some photos of your collection?

Here are a couple of pictures of my plants, I'm sorry I can't see how to fix the orientation of the pictures. I have some higher shelves at the window as well, this gives me more space. The only problem being that I do quite often knock plants down... Something similar to effects of burrowing animals in the wild, or earthquakes. They seem to survive this well thankfully!
