July 2024: Down South

Post by Cidermanrolls »

My selection for July is plants from the southern half of the southern continents, be it the Americas, Africa or even the Antipodes.
I expect Lithops and other succulents from South Africa and plenty of cacti from Argentina and Chile. I’ve no clue what succulents to expect from Australia or New Zealand, I look forwards to anything from there.

I will open with an Austrocactus, which lives in my unheated cold frame and whose parents hail from the Mendoza region in Argentina and a Pterocactus from Neuquen, Argentina. The label says Pterocactus conoideus, but I believe this to be Pterocactus neuquensis, based on Norbert Sarnes’ pictures. I love the potato body of this plant, but it hasn’t yet bloomed for me.

Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs. Recently discovered gorgeous Gasteria.

Growing in Nottingham for the past 4 years and recently found my way to a Nottingham branch meeting. A few plants on a windowsill has very quickly turned into a greenhouse full!

Attempting to grow a range of turbinicarpus, coryphantha, escobaria and several other cactus genera. Tylecodons, pelargoniums and conophytums keep me occupied in the winter and an ever expanding number of gasteria live under the bench.

Mostly growing cacti people may label astrophytum, aylostera, echinocereus, echinopsis, gymnocalycium, mediolobivia or sulcorebutia, in too little space with not enough sunshine, but lots of care. Long live collection numbers!
