Hello from North London

Post by Boo »

Hi all,

I've just joined the BCSS. For nearly 60 years I've had not remotely green fingers, my gardening being limited to cutting the grass, heaving bags of compost around for my wife (who does have green fingers), and getting up a ladder to 'cut that bl&%dy pyracantha'.

But on our regular trips to garden centres, Wisley (Mrs Boo is a fully paid up RHS member) and the like, I have, for some time, been fascinated by succulents. Earlier in the year I picked up a small RHS book on Succulents and Cacti and then on a visit to Wisley for our anniversary, I picked up a few small plants (Delosperma, Sedum, Sempervivum, Echevaria and Arenaria), and then a few more from an online nursery (not sure what the protocol is on mentioning businesses).

I've planted them up in a couple of pots, only for someone on a Facebook group said, "What if the plants in the pot have different watering requirements?" - good point well made, I'll have to figure that out as I go along - but thus far they seem to be doing ok.

There's a temptation to go out and buy a wheelbarrow-load more plants, but I've decided to try and learn the basics first, before prising open my wallet again. Looks like Lea Valley is my local group, so hopefully I'll be able to get along and say hello / pick their brains before long.

Other than that: Late 50's, married to the lovely Mrs Boo, spent my life in IT before being made redundant a few years ago (if you own an independent bookshop and want an enthusiastic new employee, please do get in touch) and hobbies include drumming, juggling, learning the ukulele, cooking, reading and board games.

I'm also an enthusiastic writer, and have started a plant blog (to go alongside my long running Lego blog), which is documenting my tentative steps into the world of succulents.

Nice to be here!

Welcome to the forum
Plenty of folk similarly drifted here (I'm one too)
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs. Recently discovered gorgeous Gasteria.

Same here, welcome! Quite jealous of your weather down south

Speaking from my own experience, don't spread yourself too thin over different genera at first.

Ooo, where’s the Lego blog, and the succulent blog?

Further north, but still regularly in London. After a career in tech, now doing a tech start up cos why not. Tho it was the bookshop comment that resonated more!

I started again a few years ago having been BCSS as a teenager, but not the decades in between. Agave, Haworthiopsis and a few cacti.
