Surprisngly effective, too. They don't last that many seasons but time was you could buy these little clear umbrellas in the Pound Shop for, erm, £1 - don't know if you still can. I used to guy mine down to stop them blowing away - latterly tried gluing a lug onto the handle to make a barb, which was neater but less effective.

Re: Agave talk & pictures
I used one bought fro Amazon over my polyphylla last year after seeing Paul's clever use of them. Think it was about £3-4 from Amazon which was the cheapest I could find online last year.
I cut the curved handle off leaving a straight plastic section but still struggled to get it located over the polyphylla due to the size of the rosette. However it certainly protected the crown really well.
The plastic has perished stored away over the summer though so I can't use it again. I've not covered my polyphylla yet this year but have some polycarb to rig up with some plant stakes if needed.

My evolving patch, a variegated desmettiana, a growing ovatifolia and Paul's recommendation of a parryi chihuahua

Gosh that looks lovely, the back panels are good for looks, super ovatifolia.
I could have that out the front instead of a boring veg patch

Re: Agave talk & pictures
Looking great Wayne. Is the desmettiana out all winter without protection?

Re: Agave talk & pictures
No, unfortunately its hauled into the greenhouse, too tender to leave under the shelter. It does pup prolifically, so when its too big it can be replaced. But definitely a statement plant for the exotic garden.

I have a small one but it definitely seems to like the heat for me! Thought you might be in a really tropical microclimate!
