Pyrrhocactus

Post by DaveW »

I said in the Eriosyce post I would open a new post for some of Roger Ferryman's habitat shots of Pyrrhocactus (sensu Backeberg non Ritter), or the Argentinian members of the now enlarged Eriosyce for those interested. Bear in mind that like all cacti these plants are variable both in spination and in flower colour, but I have only had about half an hour to extract and re-size the images to post, so just had to sample them.

Flower colour can vary even within some species from yellowish to reddish and Pyrrhocactus means "flame cactus" a reference to the reddish yellow or flame coloured flowers of some species. Anyway for those who are interested in Pyrrhocactus:-

Pyrrhocactus straussianus (Tupungato).

Others to follow as I can only put one image in per post.

Great photos Dave.

If you use Photobucket, you can very easily fire a number of photos. into the same posting at once.

Last on for the present.

Pyrrhocactus bulbocalyx:-

Pyrrhocactus are a bit tricky as they don't seem to like pricking out as seedlings, or transplanting, and few of us get to see them in habitat.

A great start Dave. I'd encourage you to carry on posting the pics "direct", as often when you look at old threads using Photobucket the pictures have gone. As you know.

Great plants Dave, cheers for the pics:)

The last one is my favourite the spination reminds me of some of the heavily spined Echinocactus horizonthalonius you occasionally see.

P. bulbocalyx are often reddish spined, similar to the P. straussianus. As I said bear in mind these are just selected examples and there is variation within the species.

When I get time I will see if I can illustrate variation.
