What's this caudiciform?

Post by ralphrmartin »

A while back I mentioned I had a caudiciform volunteer seedling pop up in one of my pots some years back. Well, it has decided to flower this year, so now there's a chance of figuring out what it is. Disappointingly, it has clusters of tiny green flowers - see the top of the first picture:

The shape of the leaves is also quite distinctive - see this picture:

I'd guess its a Disocorea from the flowers. The tuber (it's more of a tuber than a caudex if I am honest) is about like a horse chestnut in size and shape: slightly flattened vertically.

Is there any expert out there who can tell me what it is?

Ralph it could be Dioscorea rupicola or some thing similar, but I am usually wrong!

Thanks for the suggestions. D. rupicola, D. quinqueloba and D. bulbifera all seem to have rather more pointed leaves than my plant. In my plant, the leaves are wider than long. I see that there are 600 species of Dioscorea, so this could be pretty hard to pin down...

Anyway, it does seem likely that at least we have the right genus.
