The Genus of the Month link title says Arvonia......not Avonia. Just a typo.

Finally I can enter the Genus of the Month, so to get the ball rolling here is my Avonia quinaria which I posted last month when it first flowered. Interestingly it is already flowering again but this time the buds have not developed on long stalks, just opened very close to the caudex. I hope I got the name right as it was the subject of some debate last time.

Thanks for looking.

That's not the plant I sent, is it? That should be ssp alstonii, larger white flowers.

A. alstonii is certainly the looker of the genus. Biggest caudex, biggest flowers, and some of the smallest stems. This one has finished flowering for the year and already discarded those stems. Those yellow ends are small buds. They probably won't develop this year.

This is the newly named A. harveyi. Others must also have it? It was on the BCSS seedlist last year. It seemed very slow and I had no hope of flowers this year. Here it was in June.

Here it is today! Seems I was babying it, when all it wanted was blazing sun and heat.

I've currently got this plant wanting to flower in my Greenhouse. I'm not sure if it wants a lot of Sun or Heat, but the buds look ready to open any day now! A. alstonii.

That's right I think I got this one from TwoBees. The A. alstonii you sent me is doing well with a couple of buds looking likely to open in the next week or two.

It will usually pick a hot day, which usually means a sunny day in a greenhouse. Flowers generally open about 4pm for 2-3 hours. One day only, don't miss the show! Flower stalks will stand up in the morning when they're ready to flower.
