Re: Agave talk & pictures
Yes, Tina, it is a bit triffid-like - I'm sure it is nearer the house than it was last week! It's also getting rather knobbly which makes me think there's stuff going on inside those bracts.
Patrick, I'm not looking forward to having to deal with the corpse. My wife won't let me anywhere near a chainsaw so it will be hard manual labour with my trusty Silky Zubat (the best pruning saw on the planet!). I know from the last time just how heavy those leaves are, too. Not great with fragile my back!

Re: Agave talk & pictures
In my climate leaving it until now, 8 months after it flowered, meant that the leaves were pretty shrivelled up, which made it easier although the flower stalks were like telegraph polls so that was serious chain saw work. The base of the plants are still in the ground though so the job isn't over. An Americana I took out before it flowered, I dug around the roots and then pulled it out with the car! Access can be an issue!Paul in Essex wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 8:28 am

Re: Agave talk & pictures
A few seed grown Agaves. They certainly don’t have the magnificent architectural form of Paul’s salmiana but I appreciate the individual character resulting from their genetic variability.
A. sobria ssp. sobria. The second plant is shaping up to have the best combination in terms of teeth and leaf colour.
A. valenciana group shot. These have been very slow but are finally starting to demonstrate characteristics of the Marmoratae group. I’m a big fan of the dark coloration on the leaf undersides, though I haven’t thought about what to do when they eventually get bigger than my house
The only A. montana out of 8 successful germinations that actually looks like montana.
The sole germination from about 20 A. temacapulinensis seeds. Hopefully it will start developing this summer.

Plant? Or owner?
All getting a bit much for a man like me of sensitive disposition.

Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.
