Advice for habitat locations in Southern California

Post by mikeashworth »

Hi,

I shall be heading off to California in a few days, intending to spend about a week in Southern California, though I will be finishing off in the Bay area as I have business up there in the following week. I have been to some of the obvious locations, such as the Joshua Tree National Park, the Anza Borrego State Park and the Huntington Botanical Gardens (all twice!), but I am keen to find some of the rarer native plants (mainly cacti, but other succulents are also of interest). I note that in Benson 1969 "The Native Cacti of California" several "interesting" cacti are found (according to the distribution maps) in the very south-western corner of San Diego county, right next to the Mexican border. I tried going there on my last trip but the area is a major military base and there doesn't seem to be easy public access.

Any advice for locations to visit would be much appreciated.

Best wishes
