The Chinese Cactus and Succulent Union is the first national Society for cactus and succulent enthusiasts in China. It was founded in 2017 by the Zhangzhou Longhai Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden and was aimed at the dissemination of knowledge and information. As a young Society, they currently have around 400 members and publish a monthly journal. On behalf of the Chinese Cactus and Succulent Union, Xiaobin Yao will a talk about ‘Interest in Cacti and Succulents in China over the Last 30 Years’.
The presentation is divided into three parts. The first part looks at the development of this activity in China. The history of the cultivation of cacti and succulents in China can be traced back to around 350 years ago. However, the main development countrywide started just a few decades ago, which matches the economic development of China. The second part will cover popular cultivars and will include why cultivars dominate the market in China. In the final part, some images from private collectors will be shared, which will give us a glimpse at what Chinese collectors grow. We anticipate that this will give us a better and clearer view about this hobby in China.

We have had a number of requests from members and friends for a talk on growing cacti and succulent from seed. We are pleased to be able to arrange this talk which we are sure will be very informative and of great interest.

Prof. Ralph Martin has been growing cacti and succulents for over 50 years and he is currently the Chairman of the BCSS Research Committee. Notwithstanding his academic background, his talk on Cacti and Succulents from Seed will be very practical and down-to-earth, showing exactly how he goes about growing these plants from seed.

The talk will start right from the beginning - where to get the seed from - to what to pot them on into when you have successfully got them up - and everything else in between. While there are various approaches to seed growing, he will give a fully illustrated set of step-by-step instructions for a method he has found to work reliably. Many plants in his collection are seed raised, some when he was a schoolboy - and he is now retired.

I did wonder, as it is someone called Paul who lives in Essex and has spent decades growing cacti and succulents outdoors. But one should never make assumptions.

Essex based Paul Spracklin is a garden designer and exotic plant enthusiast who has been growing cacti and succulent plants outside for over 30 years. This all-consuming passion has led to several trips to see plants in habitat, notably eight field trips to pay homage to his much beloved Mexican succulent genera Agave, Yucca, Nolina and Dasylirion.
Paul’s garden has featured in newspapers, magazines, books, and TV, including BBC Gardeners’ World. He has written several articles on cacti, succulents, and bromeliads for RHS publications although his book, The Exotic Dry Garden, remains a work in progress. One day!
With examples from a few selected gardens, mainly his own, Paul will show in this briefest of overviews how cacti and succulents can be incorporated into a garden landscape, adding a new dimension to our hobby by utilising ‘the great outdoors’.
