Seeing Tom in person, I must say he's a pleasure to listen to online as well! The countless mentions of BCSS were a nice addition, and shame he didn't show the massive D. elephantipes from the arid polytunnel!

We have been hoping to have Ian Thwaites give us one of his talks for quite some time now and we are excited that he has agreed to do so this month.
Ian is a past chair of the BCSS and an International Garden Photographer of the Year award-winning botanical photographer. Many of his images capture the natural beauty of the subjects whether in a formal garden, their natural environment or as a simple portrait. He is an active member of the Professional Garden Photographers Association and a committee member of the Garden Media Guild. His images have appeared in many European garden and specialist magazines, newspapers and online. He also writes for the popular horticultural press and has been interviewed on BBC Gardeners World.
Many of his best-known images are abstracts that focus on a specific feature. He enjoys capturing structure and form in his photography and hopes to draw the viewer into appreciating the intricacies of the natural world.
Ian enjoys growing a vast array of plants and can usually be found pottering in the garden or greenhouse with either a camera, a watering can, or a knife ready to take a cutting.
In his presentation Ian will help you take better plant images irrespective

An excellent presentation, as you say. However, I would say Ian was showing how to make lovely photographs of your plants. As he said, he is selling dreams.
Recording your plants would be my mugshot style - one from the front, one from the side and one of the scene of the crime. Remember to include all the aliases in the description.
Trimming the beautiful, protective dried leaf sheaths from a conophytum so that it looks better? Comments from mesembryanthemomanes, please. The plants in my dreams have all sorts of strange and wonderful forms.
I might dust the next plant I photograph. Or at least blow on it to dislodge any debris.

I am not a mesembryanthemomane myself (but I germinated and subsequently killed a few pots, so am heading there!), but about one I guess - I remember reading in CactusWorld how Terry S. was preparing his Conophytums to shows doing exactly that
