Could it be a form of P. skottsbergii? Based on Elisabeth and Norbert Sarnes' new book on the genus, that would seem to be the closest match - P. neuquensis flowers from lateral stems, and the stems seem too smooth for P. araucanus (although I have a couple of similar looking plants labelled araucanus - must take a closer look at those...).

Thanks, Norbert! I was awaiting your reply confirming P. neuquensis before I responded further
It is a plant I obtained as Pterocactus sp.from Paul Hoxey a couple of years ago which he acquired from Chris Holland back in 1998, so it has been in cultivation in the UK for a good while.
Thank you all for your responses.
