When is the "best" time to repot?
When is the "best" time to repot? Is it some time after the last watering, say early winter in order for the plants to adjust to new compost, and root scars to heal? Or is it early spring before the first watering of the year?
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

I repot all year, though mostly during summer. Never had any issues.

I did all my pumice repotting in the middle of winter.
Not sure it matters when as long as the mix is dry and plants are given time to settle.

Like Karl, although I do a lot of repotting in winter.

Re: When is the "best" time to repot?
Pretty much.
I do more in the spring when I know plants will outgrow their current pot during the summer.
Never found time of year to be much of an issue tbh.

I'm a bit limited by health problems so re-potting is done a few plants at any time of year providing my back permits walking to greenhouse and moving plants.

Re: When is the "best" time to repot?
I have always assumed that winter was best as the plants (nearly all cacti) were dormant and root damage would heal before any watering took place. However, even if that does not matter I would still stick with winter as I have more spare time to do it then.

Continuing in the theme .... how crucial is the period between repotting and the next watering?

Depends if its a cactus or succulent, succulents sooner than cacti

Re: When is the "best" time to repot?
By 'repot' I'm assuming that we're really talking about 'potting on', taking a plant out of its pot, keeping the root ball intact and putting it into a larger pot with a bit more compost. I try to keep it facing the same direction when it goes back into the collection. It can be done at any time but winter is best as it's easier when the compost is dry.
I've never gone for the 'repotting' thing where all the compost is removed - there must be some strange satisfaction in staring at the remaining roots left after the compost has been removed. If there's root mealy it will show on the inside of the pot so there's no point in ripping off all the compost. The only exception is growing in pumice or similar when it's often not possible to keep the root ball intact.
I'll just sit back now and wait for someone to disagree with everything I've just written.
