Completely agree on both points. Lack of opuntiads was a bit disappointing I agree.

One of my great joys when I started out in the specialised areas of gardening (originally with bulbs and alpines) was the excitement of a new printed plant list dropping through the letterbox and sitting down with a brew to look through it. Online just does not feel the same.

a new printed plant list dropping through the letterbox
I used to love getting Doug & Vivi Rowlands catalogue, they always seemed to get the rare & unusual, I was friends with them after a while & used to phone my order in so the seeds & bill arrived then I sent the payment, how good was that service.

varied collection of succulents and cacti but I especially like Euphorbia's, Ariocarpus and variegated agaves.

Hi ESP
Many thanks for your information on the other seed suppliers. They had an excellent choice of seeds and I’ve just ordered a load of seeds which I’ve always been looking for. Many thanks for your helpful advice

I only joined the C&S hobby shortly before the Rowlands retired but I still have things from seed from their last two catalogues.
I had a similar relationship with the late Kath Dryden VMH, whose list of bulbs and rare woodland plants was always good and written in a wonderful style. She got to know me quite well and really encouraged me (I was only in my 30s) and gifts would often arrive in the form of extra plants.

It certainly is a nice touch for those who have cheque books, but is a real pain for those who don't (from the top of my head about £3 + a trip to the post office), and who are the future of the Society, in one form or another. Such painpoints should be eliminated, not cherished.

In the UK, 10% of the population live in digital poverty, with no access to online services including forums and online purchasing sites and online banking. For them, often their only methods of purchase are paper catalogues and cheques other than face-to-face shopping. Just because we are fortunate and can access digital services, should not be the reason we exclude people because they are not as fortunate. We should "level up", rather than draw a cut off point at which we discriminate. We should be ashamed of ourselves, for, not having access to ALL forms of payment (as most other societies and organisations do provide), and even THINKING about excluding any person from access to the Society and its services.
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Tina, you must have been very young when you bought from Doug Rowland. Just about everyone used to buy seed from him way back in the last century. His seed list and service were outstanding. Most packets were 10 or 20p and they always arrived by return post, order on a Monday and the seed would arrive on a Wednesday. He had a little toy 'John Bull Printing Kit' which he used to stamp the names on the packets. Any older seed would show up as the packets started to yellow in time. I only went round to see him once, he had a very efficient filing system for his seed packets and quite a nice collection. I've still got one of his posh pens somewhere.

I see where the misunderstanding might have come from and just want to clarify, that by "eliminating the painpoints" I meant only and exclusively the need to introduce electronic payments as an additional option, and not replacing the currently used ones.

PS: True is also that the same discussions happened last year, and probably every year before last since the introduction of the Internet, wire transfers and PayPal, each topic starting in their own respective year.

And I would bet that this discussion will be like many on the forum ... continuing next year .... and the next .....
