Bloody typical

Post by Nick_G »

I'm not growing much from seed this year, just 24 pots of mainly Lobivia wrightiana and Gymnocalycium prochazkianum and a pot of Yavia cryptocarpa. Guess which pot a wandering snail had a snack on last night whilst totally ignoring all the rest? It left 6 seedlings untouched so not all lost. I've brought the pot into the house, they always return to finish their meal.

Sorry to hear that Nick, I know what you mean though, I have seen a few trails around the propagators but none have got in yet, the scattering of the blue pellets inside the greenhouses keeps the worst at bay.
I cannot use them outside because of the dogs. But I have got a couple of frogs which visit.

We can’t even legally feed them with that nice blue snail food any more.

Is one allowed to say, "Sod legal"?
I know some plaintiff will cry "enviro" crap. But I can't see Mrs Tiggywinkle getting into the GH. And as for PC Plod .... got better things to chase like Covid party people.
Am I getting too cynical in my dotage?

Depends what you mean. Ones laced with iron salts are still legal, even if metaldehyde isn't outdoors.

Metaldehyde was legal "indoors" until at least recently even if not now.

I had a similar experience last year, except it was a mouse that got my Yavia seedling, before snacking on Notocactus seeds.

I see Partygate round ups have finished. Hide the pellets ... they'll be after slug and snail murderers next.

I thought it was slugs and snails they had already rounded up  (sorry I had to do it)

BTW My fine gravel traps around my Hostas has all but stopped damage. They don't like to cross it, apparently?

Nobody told the slugs and snails here in GOC not to cross fine gravel .... little beggars here must have bellies like elephant skin.
