A couple of Huernias

Post by Diane »

A few Huernias are flowering now, but I’ve chosen just two to post here.

First is Huernia pillansii which is generally an easy plant, but can collapse when you least expect it.

Followed by a rather nice hybrid Huernia ‘Speckled Jim’, which I have shown in the past. It seems that some hybrids have a robustness lacking in the species (says she, crossing fingers!)

(tu)
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.

Very funky flowers, though if you don't mind me asking where did you aquire the plants? I'm thinking about growing one of my own.

I’ve had the H. pillansii for many years - forgotten where from. The hybrid ‘Speckled Jim’ came as a cutting from a friend.

I have acquired quite a few from foreign sellers on eBay in the past, but that avenue has closed now, unfortunately. They aren’t readily available in the UK, but you might see the occasional plant offered on eBay.

The demise of the IAS also means the loss of the excellent seed list.
Not a great time to be a Stapeliad grower.

Wasn't it UK founded? Maybe BCSS could integrate the remnants somehow?
