I visited the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens this past weekend. They have some fantastic specimens in their glasshouses, in both their Arid Worlds (self-explanatory) house and their Continents Apart house (a study of convergent evolution).

My personal highlights were the welwitchia miribalis and the aloe ferox.

Of further interest is what they were growing outdoors and how the plants had coped with this winter. For example, they had a large agave americana under shelter which looked completely dead. Several other smaller agaves planted in their rock garden were a mixed bag. The variegated a. americanas were obliterated, for example.

A totally exposed opuntia phaeacantha was living its best life.

I filmed a video tour of the whole thing and put it up on my YouTube channel those interested in seeing more. Well worth a visit if you get the chance.
