A small collection of copiapoa

Post by greatnorthernexotic »

After a year of collecting, here's my modest collection of copiapoa.
Does anyone else collect this genus? I've love to see some photos, especially of mature specimens.

hi,
Here is a slightly embarrassing shot of some of mine, showing lots of mess. I didn't get around to a clean up of this end section as all the odd plants get shifted down until I decide if its a repot or shift on.
I have a few more & some beauties from Tony Morris.
copiapoa ugh.jpg

this is two of them sun's out hats on, I'm always a bit caution with new plants as you never know what the previous growing conditions were, full sun, shade, garden etc, even the orientation to the sun can result in scorch

I have saved this image right way & upside down, something is going wrong as they all go upside down, up to the mods (Tina, corrected, Tony)

Fantastic collection, Tina! There's just someone about the species with particularly pale epidermis that I can't resist. Any general care tips for this genus? What's the lowest temperature your greenhouse gets in winter? Watering regime?

I have quite a lot of Copiapoas, not so mature as some of yours, mostly grown from seed. I find this photo amusing. Don't assume I grow them in the dark, but in the spring I start them out with some middday shade to let them adapt after the winter.

Very nice plants indeed, and if you are patient you could end up with something like my C taltalensis. Seed grown from 1987 lol

Super photo Benjy, its always surprising how much variety there is.
Great Northern, I have mine at the end so its less direct sun & they have a fan directly pointing at them not over head like I normally would in the greenhouse.
Getting more copiapoa has been my latest 'obsession', I'm quite happy with them now & just need to doa repot & label, chatting to a friend & he grows them in a lot of pumice and says they get much better roots this way.
I just repotted a c.solaris from Colin Norton's auction but it has a stump no roots, do these often have shallow/fine roots, no turnips.

Hi Benjy, as Tina points out there is quite a variety out there. I can see how my seed supplier may have got it wrong. Thanks for the update.
