Huernia help

Post by Cactuscat2 »

Hello. First time huernia grower here. Can anyone tell what sort of huernia this is please? It was a gift and came with what I now know as seedpods. Never saw the flowers. I took the pods off the plant as they had been there for over a year. Pods opened to reveal beautiful seed formation inside but two days later they exploded! What do I do with them now? Thank you.

There is no way to know which Huernia it is, although the most common species is H. zebrina, also possibly Orbea variegata.

It’s rather late in the year for sowing seeds, unless you can provide bottom heat AND extra light, so might be best to wait until spring. However asclepiad seed can have short viability, and should be sown fresh. You would need to remove the hairy awn on the seeds before sowing.

If you do need to wait for spring, save the seeds in an airtight container in the cool and dark.

Good luck!

I'm with Diane here, I think it might be Orbea variegata.

Perhaps sow half now and half next spring.

I've never seen people use sweetcorn as a top-dressing before

I sowed a 'few' of the seeds mentioned in this thread:

viewtopic.php?p=330091&hilit=Orbea+variegata#p330091

I now have 60 seedlings that I don't really know what to do with.
So be careful......

Sweetcorn! I have a few different coloured top dressings! Lovely pink and white one for pink echeveria for example. Aquarium shops are great!
