Aloe broomii

I purchased this plant from Stuart earlier in the year, and am impressed by how quickly it has grown - it is perhaps twice the size when I bought it. I just hope that it makes as handsome an adult plant as it does as a seedling:

That is a good, dark-spined form -lovely.

They are actually pretty cold tolerant if dry. I've been trying plants for years as and when I have been able to get them and finally hit on a good spot at the base of a palm that keeps the weather off it - came through my last winter.

Hi Ralph,

I always smile when Stuart puts one of these up for sale on his listing as he describes it as a small growing Aloe. I would describe it as a medium to large sized plant eventually, We have one in a 50 or 60cm full depth pot and it flowered a couple of years ago. The problem is keeping it upright, rather top heavy. So keep it potted on.

My description does say it grows to about 25cms, I flowered one back in the days when I used BEF pots, it was in a 7in pot but probably flowered due to being stressed and needing repotting. When I had one planted out in free root room it grew larger but didn't flower. They make nice sales plants as they look good at a small size. I've changed by description from small-growing to smaller-growing though I don't have any large enough to sell at the moment. It used to be around in UK garden centres but secondary wholesalers are avoiding importing Aloes due to extra paperwork and costs as they're CITES plants.

That tends to give the impression it will shrivel... I expect my plants to grow larger, not smaller.

Probably more to do with the way I took the photo. Your picture is more like the real colour of mine...
