Would anyone know which Melo. this is ?? Local garden center purchase no label but good size, now filling a nine inch pot . photo quality poor sorry.

Check out Melocactus bahiensis on google images Stephen - some plants look very similar to yours.

Great looking plant, Stephen! IMO Melos are never easy to ID until fully mature, but I will throw my hat in the ring for M. zehntneri (Taylor):

Please post close up pictures of the cephalium, the spines and the measurements (height, diameter, number of spines in a cluster length of spines) the colour of the flowers and fruits can also help in ID's
Melo's are difficult to identify, I?ve got 3 I?m still trying to ID, (had them for a number of years) narrowed them down to a choice of 3, but unless I have access to an electron microscope to look at the pollen, I doubt I?ll get any closer.
