Saving water

Post by iann »

I planted containers with mostly succulents this year to cut down on having to water them. As you can see it worked, this one is soaking wet with no effort from me :) Kudos to anyone who can name all the plants.

Hi Ian,

Nice quiz, but not easy!
Genus 1 point, species 1 point, so 16 in total?

Back row: titanopsis schwantesii (or primosii if you accept that name), aptenia cordifolia, delosperma esterhuysenia, nananthus species Virginia mine

Middle left: anacampseros retusa

bottom row: cephallophyllum? (could be many things), ebracteola derenbergiana (at least I have it labeled as such), bergeranthus multiceps?

6/16, Tom! Tricky without flowers and not quite enough detail on the capsules ;) Perhaps the overhead angle doesn't help either?

As an addendum, Tom listed eight plants, but there is a bonus ninth plant in the picture actually growing in a different container.

indeed tricky, especially because most of these I don't grow myself. I'm more a cono freak as you know. They're pretty misleading. I'm sure that I'll have the of-course-feeling when you tell me the names.

The lizard foot one is a Titanopsis... whee, I got a point! :D Pretty plants but not E.obesa enough for me to know what species they are. ;)

I also like that white gravel, sets them off a treat. (tu)

NB. Anyone failing to provide a sensible name for me to address them will be called, or referred to, as Fred.

No good with these :( What is the "pot" Ian? I keep thinking of making something like these up for a few Alpines

Lets see,
Tom mark2, 5/18 (I included the ninth plant although that is very difficult)
Julie, 0/18!

There's a clue in there ;) Another clue would be that all except one of these plants are in the same family.

The pot is a lightweight concrete cast stained with iron sulphate. I forget the exact concrete recipe, I've tried several, it is probably vermiculite, sand, and cement.
