A little present

Post by iann »

My sister gave me these today, fresh from the Canary Islands. Believe it or not, I don't have these three species!

That's it is Hob or to be precise A. ornatum v. niveum.

Niveum - from the Latin word nivis, meaning snow!

Nice plant

Thanks Bill, I didn't know the variety. I have some ornatum hybrids but not the actual species, although one of the hybrids is pretty similar to a standard ornatum.

Serena, I believe these three are Notocactus leninghausii, Astrophytum ornatum, and Mammillaria melanocentra. None are too difficult to find, all are relatively easy to grow and have nice flowers.

iann i would lean more towards N. warasii rather than Notocactus leninghausii for the first one (not enough ribs)

Really? I'm used to seeing the big ones where the ribs and spines are really well separated.

There don't seem many ribs for leninghausii. I wondered about magnifica or warasii, but not sure it's quite right for either, the areoles tend to merge more on these.

PS overlapped somewhat with Hob's post on similar lines
