I didn't know this was scented

Post by Ray_in_Norfolk »

Hello everyone

In the gh this morning I was aware of a nice scent, rather rose-like but not very strong. I looked everywhere but could see no suspects. Then I spied this - no, can't be, theyre too small. But sniff, sniff, (mind your nose!) there was the scent:

Yes, I have one of those (though no offsets) flowering at the mo and the smell is indeed very pleasant (though not very strong).

Any recommendations for other small, easily fowered cacti with nice scents??

M.surculosa has a nice perfume, lemony not strong. It flowers quite easily, and clumps up nicely.

Yes, I have M. surculosa too, a lovely yellow flower smelling of sherbet.

Other smaller plants that I like the smell of are Lophophora williamsii, Thelocactus bicolor, and the one that has been flowering its socks off this year, Echinocereus reichenbachii which really does fill the gh with scent:
this is in a 9cm pot

I believe that my escobaria minima was also slightly scented and you can't get much smaller than that!

Got to admit I haven't noticed any scent, surculosa yes, baumii etc.. Echinocereus viridiflorus fills my ghouse with a nice lemon scent, I'm sure others do but my sense of smell isn't that great.

The strongest smelling ones I had were Dolichothele longimamma. That would perfume the whole greenhouse when in flower.

The thing is people have different senses of smell and some can smell scent in one flower whilst others often can't.

gymnocalcium baldianum and leuchtenbergia principis have nice smells and don't grow too big.
copiapoa calderana is fairly stinky but has nice spines, useful for reminding you what nice smells are like..

Mine hasn't formed any offsets yet but it is growing very nicely and I'll have to stick my nose in there! Luckily, those spines aren't too bad as they lay across the plant body more than stick out!

Marty, looks like a plant in prison! :)

Just goes to show how wonderful Mother Nature can be doesn't it? Those beautiful little flowers are encased in a network of spines, although there is little danger of getting hurt by them as they all seem to lay across the plant rather than protrude from it!
