Welcome to the forum Sheila.

Of the genera you mention I wouldn't worry too much about sheltering things like Notocactus, Gymnos, Lobivias etc from rain. I leave quite a few of them in a cold frame over winter and then take the lid off in late spring, leaving them open to the elements with no ill effects apart from the odd slug attack. Turbs won't like prolonged wet though.

Hi again,

I would just like to thank everyone for welcoming me and for your comments and help. It is very much appreciated.

Dot asked if I grow succulents - well I have a few mesembs and a couple of oddments but that's it really. I don't have enough room for many other succulents.

Welcome to the Forum Sheila.:welc:
There's a lot of sensible advice in the earlier replies, and you've got some decent height to play with in your frame. You'll soon fill it tho!

Good growing.

Welcome to the Forum Sheila, I'm glad you decided to stop lurking, there are a lot of other people out there doing the same. I grow some of my succulents in a cold frame in summer but no cacti, they stay in the greenhouse. However in winter I tend to move them into the greenhouse, out of the way of marauding slugs and snails. Some end up on windowsills and porches, it takes a lot of moving about but protects vulnerable plants from extreme cold and predators.
Obsessive Crassulaceae lover, especially Aeoniums but also grow, Aloes, Agaves, Haworthias and a select number of Cacti.
